First session of UN ECE Group of Experts on rolling stock marking.

The first formal meeting of the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) Group of Experts on establishing a common, permanent unique marking system for railway rolling stock took place between 2nd and 4th September 2020 in Geneva. Attendees included representatives from various governments, intergovernmental organisations and the private sector. The RWG attended with a delegation led by RWG Chairman Howard Rosen and Marianna Levtov, the chair of the RWG URVIS group.

There were presentations at the meeting from the delegation from the Russian Federation, the European Union Agency for Railways and the RWG. There was a detailed discussion on various aspects of how rolling stock should be marked once the unique vehicle identifier was being issued by the International Registry in Luxembourg following the entry into force of the Luxembourg Protocol. This session was the beginning of a two-year programme to formulate a set of practical rules for the industry. You can read the complete report of the first meeting here. If you have any questions or comments for the RWG URVIS group working on this project, please send them to us at info@railworkinggroup.org.
